How to use the Video to GIF
- Drop a video on the page or click Choose a video. MP4, WebM and MOV clips open if your browser can play them. To make a slideshow GIF from photos instead, choose several images.
- Mark the moments you want. The first four seconds are selected to start with. Drag a moment's edges on the timeline to trim it, drag its middle to move it, or type exact start and end times. Click Add moment to take another part of the clip; moments are joined in list order, and the arrows change that order.
- Press Play with Play only the moments ticked to watch just your selection. Space plays and pauses, the arrow keys step one frame, and I and O set the start and end of the selected moment at the playhead.
- Crop by dragging the frame on the video or its handles, or pick a shape: 1:1, 4:5, 9:16, 16:9, 4:3 or the original.
- Choose GIF, WebP or MP4 (WebM in browsers without H.264), the width, frames per second, speed and direction: forward, reverse or ping-pong (there and back). For GIF and WebP, choose whether it loops or plays once, twice, three or five times.
- To add text, open Text and click Add text. Set its position, size, colour and outline, and show it for the whole animation or between two times.
- Click Create. The result plays on the page with its real file size; click Download to save it. For GIFs you can change the colours, dithering and palette, or tick Keep the GIF under and enter a size in MB.
What it does well
Several moments, one animation. Most converters take one start and end time. Here you mark as many moments of the clip as you need on a timeline with thumbnails, trim them to the exact frame, put them in any order and get them joined, then play them back, reversed or as a ping-pong loop.
GIFs that look sharp and stay small. Colours are chosen from the whole animation, then mapped with Floyd-Steinberg or ordered dithering that you can tune. Pixels that did not change since the previous frame are reused instead of stored again, which shrinks GIFs of mostly still scenes a lot, and frame timing is rounded so the GIF runs at the right speed. If the file has to fit a limit, the tool reduces it step by step and tells you what it changed.
Three formats from one edit. The same crop, text and timing can be saved as GIF, as full-colour animated WebP or as an MP4 encoded by your browser's own video encoder, and you see the real file size before you download. It all runs on your device, with no upload, account or watermark.
Frequently asked questions 8
Are my videos uploaded anywhere?
No. The video is opened and read by your own browser, and the GIF, WebP or MP4 is encoded on your device, so nothing is sent to a server. Your usage history, if you keep one, records only settings such as format, width and frame rate, never videos, images, file names or the text you add.
Which video files can I open?
Anything your browser can play: MP4 with H.264 nearly everywhere, WebM (VP8, VP9 or AV1) in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and MOV files from phones and cameras when they are H.264. iPhone videos recorded as HEVC (H.265) open only in browsers that can decode HEVC, such as Safari. If a file cannot be decoded the tool says so instead of failing silently; convert it to H.264 MP4 or set the camera to Most Compatible.
Should I choose GIF, WebP or MP4?
GIF plays everywhere, including email and old chat apps, but it is limited to 256 colours per frame and is the largest. Animated WebP keeps full colour and is usually several times smaller; all current browsers and many apps show it. MP4 is the smallest by far and the best choice for social media, but it is a video: it has no loop setting and no sound here. MP4 needs a browser that can encode H.264 through WebCodecs; otherwise the tool offers WebM.
How do I make the GIF smaller?
In order of effect: select shorter moments, lower the width, lower the frames per second, and use fewer colours or the Pattern or None dithering. Keep Reuse unchanged pixels on, which stores only what changed since the previous frame. Or tick Keep the GIF under, enter a size in MB, and the tool tries fewer colours, then fewer frames, then a smaller width until the file fits, and tells you what it changed.
What do the dithering options do?
A GIF frame can only use 256 colours, so smooth gradients such as skies turn into bands. Diffusion (Floyd-Steinberg) spreads each pixel's colour error to its neighbours and gives the smoothest result. Pattern (ordered Bayer dithering) uses a fixed fine grid, which flickers less between frames and compresses a little better. None gives flat colours and the smallest file. The strength slider sets how much dithering is applied. A shared palette uses one set of colours for the whole GIF, so colours do not shimmer from frame to frame; Per frame picks the best colours for each frame, which helps when scenes change a lot.
Can I make a GIF from photos?
Yes. Choose or drop several images instead of a video. Each image is shown for the time you set, either for all images or for each one in the list, with an optional crossfade between them. Pick the frame shape, then Fill to crop each image to that shape or Fit to show it whole with borders in a colour you choose. Text, reverse, ping-pong and all three formats work the same as for video.
Can I combine several parts of one video?
Yes. Add as many moments as you like with Add moment, trim each one, and reorder them with the arrows. They are joined into one animation in that order, so you can skip the boring middle of a clip or put the best bit first. The same moment can even be used twice.
Is there a length limit or a watermark?
There is no watermark and no sign-up. The only limit is your device's memory: GIF and MP4 frames are held in memory while they are encoded, and the tool shows the amount, warns when it gets large and stops above about 1.2 GB, suggesting a lower frame rate or width. Long clips are better saved as WebP or MP4.
