How to use the Batch File Renamer

  1. Add files or drop a whole folder. Any file type works: photos, PDFs, music, documents.
  2. Pick a quick start, or build a name pattern with tokens such as {name}, {n} for a counter, {date} and {taken} for the photo date.
  3. Add find and replace, letter case, prefix, suffix or an extension change. The preview shows every new name as you type.
  4. Choose the numbering order: as listed, by name, by date or by photo taken date. In list order you can move files up and down.
  5. Download the renamed files as a ZIP, or in Chrome and Edge rename them directly inside the folder, with an Undo button.

Name patterns and tokens

The pattern decides the new name before any other rule runs. Tokens in curly brackets are filled in for each file. {name} is the original name, {n} is a counter you control with Start, Step and Digits, and {date} and {taken} accept a format such as {date:YYYYMMDD} or {taken:YYYY-MM-DD_HHmm}. Everything else in the pattern is kept as typed.

Safe names everywhere

Windows does not allow the characters \ / : * ? " < > | in file names, nor names such as CON or NUL, and neither Windows nor macOS likes names that end in a dot or a space. The tool replaces these automatically so the renamed files open on every system.

Frequently asked questions 8

Are my files uploaded?

No. The browser reads them locally. Files are never sent anywhere, so it works for private photos and work documents and is fast even for thousands of files.

Can it rename files on my computer directly, without a ZIP?

Yes, in Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers. Click "Rename inside a folder", allow access to the folder, check the preview and rename. An Undo button restores the original names right after. Other browsers download a ZIP of renamed copies instead.

Does renaming change the files themselves?

No. Only names change. Contents are copied byte for byte and the ZIP keeps each file's original modified date.

How do I number photos in the order they were taken?

Use the "Photos by date taken" quick start. It reads the date stored in each photo (EXIF) and names them like 2026-10-06_001.jpg in shooting order. Files without EXIF fall back to their modified date.

Why does 10 come after 2 in name order?

The tool sorts names naturally, the way people read numbers, so img2 comes before img10. Plain alphabetical sorting would put img10 first.

What happens if two files would get the same name?

With "Fix duplicate names" on, the tool adds (2), (3) and so on. Names are compared without regard to upper or lower case because Windows and macOS treat them as the same file.

Can I use regular expressions?

Yes. Turn on "Regular expression" in Find and replace. Captured groups are available as $1, $2 in the replacement, for example ^IMG_(\d+)$ to photo-$1.

Is there a limit on the number of files?

There is no fixed limit. Lists of several thousand files work; the preview shows the first 500 rows but every file is renamed. ZIP size is limited only by your device's memory.
