Bookmark Organizer
Sort a messy bookmarks file into clean topic folders, remove duplicates and empty folders, and import the result back into your browser.
Runs on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
1. Your bookmarks
No file at hand?
Add exports from several browsers to combine them. Same-named folders are merged and duplicates removed.
How to export your bookmarks
Chrome, Whale, Brave: press Ctrl+Shift+O (Cmd+Option+B on Mac) to open the Bookmark manager, click ⋮ at the top right, then Export bookmarks.
Edge: press Ctrl+Shift+O, click ⋯ in Favorites, then Export favorites.
Firefox: press Ctrl+Shift+O, then Import and Backup › Export Bookmarks to HTML. A JSON backup also works.
Safari: File › Export › Bookmarks.
2. How to organize
3. Download
Put them back in your browser
1. Keep the file you exported as a backup.
2. To avoid having everything twice, delete the old bookmarks first: in the Bookmark manager press Ctrl+A in each folder, then Delete. If you use sync, this also changes your other devices.
3. Import the new file. Chrome/Edge/Whale: Bookmark manager › ⋮ › Import bookmarks. Firefox: Import and Backup › Import Bookmarks from HTML. Safari: File › Import From › Bookmarks HTML File.
Chrome puts imported bookmarks in a folder named "Imported". Drag its contents where you want them.
How to use the Bookmark Organizer
- Export your bookmarks from your browser as an HTML file (the steps for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Whale are in the tool).
- Open the file here. Add exports from other browsers too if you want to combine them.
- Pick how to organize: by topic, by website, by the year you saved them, or keep your own folders and only clean up.
- Check the result. Rename folders, move or delete bookmarks, and search for anything you want to find.
- Download the new bookmarks file and import it back into your browser.
Combine bookmarks from several browsers
Open exports from Chrome, Firefox and Safari together. Folders with the same name are merged, the same page saved in two browsers is kept once, and you get a single tidy file you can import anywhere. A spreadsheet (.csv) list of every bookmark with its folder and date is also available.
Frequently asked questions 6
Can this organize my bookmarks without exporting them?
No website can read your browser's bookmarks directly, which protects your privacy. Exporting takes a few seconds: open the Bookmark manager (Ctrl+Shift+O), choose Export, and open the file here. When you are done, import the new file the same way.
How does sorting by topic work?
Each address is matched against a built-in list of about 980 well-known sites in 26 topics, such as Search & Portals, Email & Messaging, Social, Communities & Blogs, Video & Streaming, Music & Podcasts. Government (.gov, .go.kr) and university (.edu, .ac.kr) addresses are recognised by their ending. Unknown sites are sorted by words in the title and address, and the rest go to Other. Sites you saved many times get their own subfolder.
What counts as a duplicate?
Two bookmarks that open the same page: http and https, www and no www, a trailing slash, #anchors and tracking parameters such as utm_source or fbclid are ignored. Different pages on the same site are not duplicates. The first copy is kept, and copies in your bookmarks bar always win.
Will my bookmarks bar be changed?
Not unless you want it to. By default the bookmarks bar stays exactly as you arranged it (only duplicates inside it are removed); everything else is organized. Untick "Leave the bookmarks bar as it is" to include it.
How do I avoid ending up with every bookmark twice?
Importing adds bookmarks; it does not replace them. Keep your exported file as a backup, delete the old bookmarks in the Bookmark manager, then import the new file. If you use browser sync, the change reaches your other devices too.
Is my browsing data uploaded or shared?
No. The file is read and organized in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere; site icons are not fetched from other services either. Signed-in history stores only the organize settings and counts, never your bookmarks.
